Denny Hamlin wins first Chase race

JOLIET, Ill. — A look at all the results and action from Sunday’s Chase for the Sprint Cup Series opener at Chicagoland Speedway:

WINNER: Denny Hamlin punched his ticket into the next round of the Chase, winning despite a torn right ACL. Hamlin beat Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon on the final restart with five laps remaining. Hamlin, who recovered from an early spin, did not pit on the last pit stop. Crew chief Dave Rogers took a chance and they stayed out on older tires. Hamlin hurt his knee Sept. 8 while playing basketball.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Carl Edwards finished second, followed by Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kurt Busch, Richard Childress Racing’s Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth, also of JGR.

Hamlin, Busch and Gordon were the only drivers to stay out on the final caution, while most of the contenders came down pit road for tires. Hamlin gave himself a 50-50 chance to take the lead on old tires.
